UZALO IsiZulu Grammar Textbook

A new isiZulu sequential, systematic and methodical noun arrangement called the UZALO Noun Cluster (UZL NC) system authored by Makhosi B.Khoza (PhD).

The UZALO IsiZulu Grammar Textbook contributes tangibly towards the building of a solid foundation for a united and proudly South African unique linguistic identity. The textbook seeks to present a practical bilingual tool that could be used and adapted into all other aBantu languages in the African continent, especially in South Africa.

In Makhosi B. Khoza's new textbook you will discover the sophistication of isiZulu language logic, yet it is simple once you master its prefix vowel and noun cluster system in particular. The vowel sequencing and the morphological pattern of all its words are not some random formations that have developed over time as habits turned into normal practices. They are ubuntu philosophy principles of balance, fairness, distinctiveness, interdependence, interrelationships and interconnectedness. Hence, in UZALO IsiZulu Grammar Textbook we present a new Ubuntu isiZulu Alphabetical Logic Order (UZALO).

The UZALO IsiZulu Grammar Textbook is premised on the assumption that the Decolonisation, Reconstruction and Reconciliation (DRR) process is a conscious and deliberate act. The DRR process does not just happen. It is created, moulded, refined and constantly changes as dictated to by the prevailing material conditions of the time. It requires creative problem-solving techniques, which are a critical attribute of isiZulu, due to the fact that it is a very systematically formulated language.

‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.’
‘Uma ukhuluma nomuntu ngolimi aluqondayo kuya ekhanda. Kepha uma ukhuluma naye ngolimi lwakhe kuya enhliziyweni.’

Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa

The approach used in UZALO IsiZulu Grammar Book

Makhosi B. Khoza (PhD)

Makhosi B Khoza PHDOur extensive study of isiZulu and its connection to the aBantu has revealed that this language is a subject of intrigue and marvel. It is deciphering the code of aBantu intelligence, philosophical world and life system’s outlook and logic. We have found many similarities between isiZulu and other aBantu languages not just in South Africa but in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. What connects the aBantu is not just the similarities between their languages but their ubuntu philosophy, which has survived for centuries despite the dehumanisation and injustices committed against these people.

The depth of the ubuntu philosophy is not sufficiently understood. In fact, some have commercialised it without appreciating its true value as a guide to how we human beings ought to live and sustain life. Even some aBantu leaders appear to have lost the powerful systems-thinking encrypted in their own languages, as you will discover while you read through this textbook.

Patriotic bilingualism in the South African context is the ability of every South African to speak at least one African language and at least one language of European origin. After extensively studying the logic and intelligence of both aBantu languages and South African languages of colonial origin, judging by their mutual intelligibility, we have concluded that there are two broad categories of language in South Africa as in Africa.

On the one hand we have languages of European origin, and on the other we have those of African origin. In South Africa, out of the eleven official languages nine are indigenous languages of African origin and two are languages from Europe or with strong colonial foundations. These ubuntu-based methodologies adopt six approaches that are highly recommended in the promotion of the distinct linguistic character of South African society.

These approaches have been used in the style adopted in this textbook. Ubuntu’s aim is always Total Quality Outcome (TQO) and this provides focus for each approach. These will be encountered throughout this textbook. [Photo credit: Shivan Parusnath]
