Rainbow Reading Level 6

The books in Level 6 can be used in any grade in the Intermediate Phase, but they are best suited to learners in Grades 5 and 6, who are between 10 and 12 years old, and who speak English as an additional language. Children who are learning English as an additional language, and who are learning other subjects through the medium of English, will need to consolidate their knowledge of vocabulary and language structures by reading English as often, and as much, as possible.

Level 6 Rainbow Reading books are 24-32 pages long and are based on familiar objects and actions. Many stories feature children the same age as the readers.

In Level 6, learners will be exposed to different kinds of books with different structures, where the text and artwork appear in various forms. There are cartoons with speech bubbles, poetry anthologies, songs and rhymes, diagrams with labels, photographs with captions and many more, so learners will get used to the idea that there are many different ways to express and present ideas. The books reinforce and consolidate vocabulary and grammar, and provide a rich and varied range of new vocabulary and structures to help children develop fluency.

There are two types of texts at this level:

  • Fiction  1500-2150 total words
  • Non-fiction  1500-2150 total words

The boxed sets in Level 6 contain a comprehensive teacher's guide which provides valuable support for teaching reading and book skills, using Rainbow Reading in the classroom, as well as guidance on each title, including links, genre, synopses, and suggested activities.
