Rainbow Reading Level 7
The books in Level 7 can be used in any grade in the Intermediate Phase, but they are best suited to learners in Grades 6 and 7, who are between 11 and 13 years old and who speak English as an additional language. Children who are learning English as an additional language, and who are learning other subjects through the medium of English, will need to consolidate their knowledge of vocabulary and language structures by reading English as often, and as much, as possible. The focus in Levels 5 to 7 is improving comprehension skills, encouraging reading for meaning, reading across the curriculum, reading for pleasure, and reading for a specific purpose - to find information. Non-fiction devices such as glossaries, indices, keys and other subject-appropriate features (such as maps) are introduced gradually with support.
Level 7 Rainbow Reading books are 32-48 pages long and are based on familiar objects and actions. Many stories feature children the same age as the readers.
There are two types of texts at this level:
- Fiction 3000-7000 total words
- Non-fiction 3000-7000 total words
The boxed sets include a comprehensive teacher's guide which provide support for teaching appropriate reading and book skills at this level, guidance on using the series in a classroom setting, and individual support for each title, including curriculum links, synopses, genre information and suggested activities.
