Components: 60 Readers, 12 Big Books, 12 colour posters, 1 Teacher's Guide. The Little Library Life Skills Kit focuses on promoting life skills to learners of five to nine years of age, as stated in the South African National Curriculum Statement. The twelve story books in the Little Library Life Skills Kit introduce and reinforce life skills concepts and language. The learners will be familiar with some of the concepts and language already and these story books deal with life skills in real situations. For example, 'Can you wriggle?' deals with human and animal movement, 'I'm a lot like you' looks at the life of a child living with HIV, 'What if?' deals with issues relating to modern technology and 'More than sorry' deals with the issue of bullying. Each story book is available as a big book and as a reader. There are five readers and one big book for each story in the kit. A set of posters and a Teacher's Guide are also included. Big Books: Big books are well suited to group and class work. The stories can be presented to groups of learners or to the whole class. New vocabulary can be discussed and the learners will be able to focus on the stories and understand and enjoy them fully. Life skills concepts within each story can then be introduced in a concrete way before the learners move on to a more abstract understanding. The language and vocabulary used in many of the big books is more detailed than that in the matching readers. Readers: Learners can read the readers on their own or in pairs. The language and vocabulary level in the readers is easier than in the big books. This will allow learners to become more confident to read independently. Posters: A full-colour poster accompanies each story and depicts elements of the story or elements of the main life skills concepts covered in the story. Some of the posters add to the storyline, others consolidate information in the story and all of them encourage discussion and language development. The posters can be used as a resource in groups, with individuals or as a whole class. Teacher's Guide: The Teacher's Guide offers lesson ideas primarily for the Life Skills Learning Programme but also covers the Literacy and Numeracy Learning Programmes. The Teacher's Guide also has three graded, photocopiable activity pages for each story book. These pages provide ideas about how to teach, expand upon and consolidate the concepts touched on in the story books. Explanation notes and all the answers are provided for the activity pages. All the stories in the kit stand on their own very well and so can be included as part of a teacher's existing routine and programme. Clear curriculum links are pointed out in the Teacher's Guide for this purpose. The twelve stories have been translated into each of the official South African languages in this Teacher's Guide, making them accessible to as wide a readership as possible.
