Ngifana nawe khulu' deals mainly with the issues around HIV and touches on AIDS too. The focus is on a young child who is living with HIV. We see how similar her life is to that of her friends. The story shows that the young girl loves to do all of the normal things that children like to do, but that she has to be careful in some instances, because she has a virus in her blood. The realities of AIDS and the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS are not dealt with here. It would be inappropriate to discuss this with young learners (but you should also use your judgment in this regard). Most learners will have heard of HIV/AIDS and need to know how it is not caught, along with the fact that it is a fatal illness. The story presents this to learners in a manageable way. There is also room for discussion about issues such as infectious diseases, spread of diseases, the importance of good nutrition and hygiene as well as a clean environment.
