Ntsiki has been away from school because she has been ill. She is returning to school on her birthday and the children are planning a surprise for her. They want to make the biggest birthday cake in the world. The main theme of this story is that of process - something that is done in a certain time to achieve an aim - in this case the baking of a cake. Getting the ingredients, measuring, mixing, heating the oven and baking the cake for the necessary length of time are the main elements of this story. Also introduced are calendar time and large numbers. The hundreds and thousands are presented as part of the fantasy story to help emphasise how large they are.
